Kersten's Ramblings

People keep asking me what the heck I do! I guess my website has a tendency to overwhelm some with too much disconnected information. They are left confused about my core messaging. This post is my attempt to work on that. Please do comment on my messaging here as I need to create a front page that clearly delivers my message.

Here is my elevator pitch.  Anybody going UP?

I am a web strategist.

There is a serious shortage of communication in many organizations between management, web site technicians and their audience. As a web strategist I plan to interpret all this technical noise, and assist in the planning and championing  of social web based communications initiatives.

Having thirty years experience leveraging the use of computers, twenty of those years working with management and extensive product development, marketing, sales and training background, 15 years of it using the Internet to communicate, I have a unique host of skills that can benefit organizations that need clarity and direction with web based initiatives.

I offer consulting services specializing in the development of a company’s online "web" presence. These services include supporting the business development strategy within an online marketplace, adhering to the online trends, utilizing the latest web technologies and services in the most effective fashion, monitoring the flow of information exchange through the medium and enabling the business tools needed to achieve full online potential.

I assess a company's current business maturity, current needs and longer term aspirations, identify their level of staff e-competence and get a feel for the corporate culture. I then carve out a customized strategic plan that can help the company engage the online world in ways that maximize communication and collaboration. The punchline is to develop trust, online.

In order to succeed at developing a trusting web presence we need to reach a perfect balance between the company, their community (or clients) and the web technologies that are used to communicate. An imbalance in any of these three environments will result in a poor online experience.

If there is imbalance between you and your community, they might view you as either distant or overbearing. You need to develop an effective balance of communication style and online tools to reach out to your community, understand them and enrich them without becoming "noise".

If there is imbalance  between you and your technology, then the process becomes frustrating and inefficient.  For any web strategy to succeed you need clean simple and useful technology to support your process so you or your team can easily communicate with your community.

If the technology fails your community then you are faced with a disconnect that leads to general disinterest. A downward spiral follows as your community sees no value in the online service you are offering.

There is no one simple "click here" plan for online success. No two organizations are alike, just like no two people are the same. A web strategist needs to fully understand the range of complexities that present themselves before determining a course of action and recommending or planning a web strategy.

I first assist management and their teams to identify their best skills to reach this new web medium. Following this, I discretely and sensitively suggest ways to improve the level of e-competence in individuals and teams to improve on their online communication. I aim to help balance all three environments to into a place of equilibrium that will open up new communication channels between people, build trust, and take online communication to a new level.

"A sales rep who desperately hands out business cards to everybody at a party usually meets deaf ears. Cold calls will be avoided. Those who get to know their audience, open up and reveal who they are, engage in rich, fulfilling conversations, usually get call backs. I've been there...I was both these people at one time or another.

I've learned that communicating online is no different. It's all about good old fashioned relationship building."
